Kenbro Chickens: The Best Breeds for Dry Areas in Kenya

The Kenbro breeds are probably the best breeds for the dry areas or the arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya. They are also very good birds to keep for meat. There are also the Sasso chickens which also come from Kenchic and these are perfect if you are looking for the best layers in the hotter arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya.

If you want to improve your local Kienyeji and get better yields of meat and eggs, you can cross them with the Kenbro and Sasso respectively. However, keeping pure Kenbro or pure Sasso chickens all from Kenchic gives you the best opportunity to maximize on their genetic potential and get maximum yields on eggs and meat.

It is advisable to keep a single rooster for every 10 hens. In order to avoid inbreeding, the rooster also needs to be changed often. You can do rooster exchange programs with other Kenbro or Sasso farmers through Kienyeji Marketplace where give farmers an opportunity to list and sell their poultry products, inputs and equipment.

Feeding Your Kenbro Chickens and Sasso Chickens

For the first eight weeks, you can feed them on top quality commercial chick mash feeds such as the Fugo Chick and Duckling Mash.

From week 8 until 18, feed them on the Fugo Grower’s Mash.

If you want the chickens to lay lots of eggs, you can subsequently feed them on the Fugo Layer Compleat Meal from week 18 onwards and for the laying duration. You can mix the layer’s mash with some locally available foods in equal proportions.
